Choosing the line spacing

Lined paper is the workhorse for handwriting practice, letters, lecture notes, journaling, drafts and worksheets. Different rulings suit different ages and tasks: wide ruling for younger pupils, college ruling for secondary and university note-taking, narrow ruling to fit more lines on long-form writing.

• Wide ruling (~8. 7 mm) for younger writers; college (~7. 1 mm) for general use; narrow (~6. 4 mm) for compact notes.
• Enable the red margin line for letters and structured note-taking.
• A4 portrait fits most European school folders; US Letter portrait for North America.

Limits of this sheet

• The ruling presets are everyday guides, not a school-issued standard.

What usually goes wrong

• Picking lines too narrow for the handwriting they will hold — narrow rule for adult notes, wide rule for younger children.
• Setting the left margin to zero and then trying to hole-punch the sheet for a binder.
• Choosing very pale lines that disappear under fluorescent classroom light.
• Skipping the orientation choice — landscape can be the right call for two-column notes.
• Forgetting to leave the top ruled line free for a hand-written title or date when you need one.
